FGC Information for Kids

Picture
Hi I’m Rory and I’m going to tell you a bit about this Family Group Conference stuff that you might have heard about. We call them FGCs for short. These special meetings happen to families all over the world and not just here in the UK. They help families sort things out.

Your social worker will have decided that your family would find a Family Group Conference really useful. It might help sort out some issues you might be having like:

Where you all live
Who looks after you
If your family needs some extra help

A person called a Family Group Conference Coordinator will come out to visit you and your family to tell you all about the FGC meeting that will be held especially for you and your brothers and sisters. They will tell you about where the meeting will be held and ask you to choose what food and drink your family might like there. You can even write the invitations.

The person who looks after you plus you and your brothers and sisters will be asked to name some family members or even close friends and neighbours who you would like to come along to your meeting. So mum, dad, grandparents, aunties,
uncles, cousins can all be part of it. And of course YOU!

The day of the meeting

You arrive with your family and other people will be there as well including the FGC person and your social worker.

The food and drinks will be set out and there may be toys, colouring books and games to amuse you.

The FGC person will start the meeting and some people will talk for a short while. After this you and your family will be left on your own to chat. You can leave the room at any time if you like.

When the adults have decided they have finished talking, everyone comes back in the room. Your family will have made a plan.
This plan is looked at by your social worker and other helpful people who decide if it will work. If everyone thinks it will, then the meeting is finished and everyone goes home.

Hopefully after the meeting everything works well for you and your family. Sometimes a meeting is held again after about 3 months to just check everyone is still happy.
