The Anti-Bullying Alliance has published the results of an online survey assessing the vulnerability of autistic children to bullying.
The poll received more than 200 responses from parents of children with Asperger Syndrome or autism spectrum conditions, and of this number, more than 80% of parents referred to children 16 or under. Key findings from the survey include:
- - 73.5% of parents said school play times and breaks were “difficult or frightening” periods in the school day for autistic children
- - 70% of parents believe their child’s condition made their peers acts negatively towards them
- - 42.4% of parents said their children were often bullied and 32.3% said their children were occasionally bullied. This compares to rates between 20% and 25% for children without a disability
