
A survey of family court judges has found that the judges support the role of Independent Social Workers (ISWs).

- ISWs are used in around a quarter of cases, particularly when judges were critical of the quality of council assessments and in complex cases where specific expertise was needed
- ISWs were mostly seen as highly experienced practitioners with specialist skills
- Just over half the judges said the quality of ISW reports was good or excellent
- Judges reported that an ISW could shorten cases and reduce litigation issue
